What taxes and paperwork apply to remote workers?

My employer is in another state. Do I owe Idaho tax?

Yes. The Idaho State Tax Commission says all of a resident's income is taxable in Idaho. An out-of-state employer must withhold Idaho tax for employees who physically work in Idaho, and can withhold for a resident who asks. Tell your employer your new address and the date you moved so payroll switches states.

What if my employer will not withhold Idaho tax?

Make quarterly estimated payments to Idaho so you do not face a large bill or penalties in April. You can pay through the Tax Commission's online services.

Will my old state still tax me?

Usually not for work you do from Idaho, but a few states, such as New York, can tax remote workers of employers based there under a 'convenience of the employer' rule. If you pay income tax to another state on the same wages, Idaho generally gives a credit for it. A tax professional can help in the first year.

What do I file in my first year?

A return (Idaho Form 43), plus a part-year return in your old state if it has an income tax. See our state taxes guide.

What else should remote workers know?

How do library study rooms work?

All Boise Public Library locations have free study rooms and Wi-Fi. Study rooms are booked online the same day, starting at 12:01 a.m., for 2-hour sessions. Meridian, Garden City, Eagle, Nampa and Caldwell have their own libraries with their own rules.

What time zone is Boise in?

Mountain Time, with daylight saving time. That is one hour ahead of Pacific Time and two hours behind Eastern Time. Note that the Idaho Panhandle in the north is on Pacific Time.
