We found no new rate change for 2026. House Bill 40 (2025) set the rate at 5.3% starting with 2025. In February 2026, House Bill 559 adopted most 2025 federal tax changes, including the larger standard deduction, the extra senior deduction and deductions for tips, overtime and car loan interest, back to Jan 1, 2025.
It offsets the sales tax you pay on groceries. It is $155 per person (you, your spouse and qualifying dependents), or the actual sales tax you paid on food up to $250 per person if you send receipts. Claim it on Form 40 (full-year residents) or Form 43 (part-year). If you do not have to file, you can still claim it; the Tax Commission's worksheet tells you whether to use Form 24, 40 or 43. Nonresidents do not qualify.
File Form 43 as a part-year resident. Report all income you received while living in Idaho plus any Idaho-source income from before you moved. Count the full months you lived here; more than 15 days counts as a month. The food credit is prorated at $12.92 per month, and as a part-year resident you can use it against tax but not get the excess refunded. You must file if your gross income was over $2,500.
Taxable Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefits are subtracted on Form 39R, so they are not taxed. IRAs, 401(k)s and most pensions are taxed. A retirement benefits deduction covers some pensions: military retirement, older federal CSRS and Foreign Service pensions, and certain Idaho police and firefighter pensions. Most need age 65, or 62 and disabled. For 2025 the maximum was $48,216 single and $72,324 joint, minus any Social Security received.
Not in the Treasure Valley. About two dozen resort cities, such as Ketchum, Sun Valley, McCall, Sandpoint and Driggs, add their own sales tax. Hotel stays in Boise and Nampa carry an extra auditorium district lodging tax.
