In short
The Boise area offers low crime, short commutes (20.0 minutes on average in Boise against 27.2 for the U.S.), sunny four-season weather and easy access to the outdoors. The trade-offs are housing that costs more than local pay comfortably supports, almost no public transit, and smoky summers and smoggy winters some years. In Boise State's 2026 statewide survey, 39% of Idahoans named housing affordability as their top budget priority.

Crime figures are for the city of Boise. Prices, wages and home values are for the Boise metro area. See the linked guides for each city.
Not in the city itself. Boise grew only about 1% from 2020 to 2025. Most new growth is in the suburbs and Canyon County, especially Star, Kuna, Meridian and Nampa, which is where traffic on roads like Chinden Boulevard and Eagle Road has grown worst.
Can I afford it on a local salary?
It depends on housing. Rents are close to the national average, about $1,850 for a 2-bedroom apartment in Boise, but buying is hard on local pay. Nampa and Caldwell cost less than Boise, Meridian and Eagle. Run your numbers with our cost of living guide and budget tool before you commit.
How bad is the smoke and smog?
It varies a lot by year. In 2024, a heavy fire year, the metro had 68 days of air unhealthy for sensitive groups or worse. In 2025 it had 1. Winter , usually November to February, bring hazy days too. If you have asthma or heart or lung disease, plan for an air cleaner and check the daily forecast.
What do people love most?
Safety, short commutes, sunshine and being minutes from trails, rivers and skiing. Many also like the smaller-city pace and friendly feel.
What surprises newcomers?
Idaho's laws differ from many states: marijuana is illegal, liquor is sold only in state stores, and abortion is banned with narrow exceptions. Idaho votes strongly Republican statewide, while the city of Boise votes more Democratic than the rest of the state. See our Idaho laws guide.
When should I visit before deciding?
Try late summer or mid-winter. That is when heat, smoke and inversions are most likely, so you see the hard side, not just the nice spring and fall weeks.
