A look-see trip to the Treasure Valley

How to spend a few days testing commutes, neighborhoods, schools and the season before you move

By J&H Digital Services LLCChecked Oct 29, 20262 sources

In short

A look-see trip is a short visit to test a move before you commit. Spend it on what listings cannot show: the real commute at rush hour, how each city and neighborhood feels, the schools your children would attend and the season you will live through. Where you live changes the drive: the Caldwell-to-Boise morning drive on I-84 averaged 31 minutes in 2024, against 19.0 minutes for the average Boise commute in 2025.

How could I spend three days?

  1. 1

Drive your commute at rush hour

From each area you are considering, drive to your job or your children's school at the hours you will travel. I-84 commutes ran at least 30% slower than normal on 37 weekdays in 2024.

  2. 2

    Compare two or three cities

Walk the center of each city and drive its edges. Use the city guides and the comparison pages for prices, commutes and growth, then see which one fits.

  3. 3

    Tour neighborhoods and rentals

Boise's neighborhood guides cover homes, schools and walkability for nine areas. Visit at the end of a workday, not only on a quiet weekend.

  4. 4

Check the schools for each address

Look up the schools for an address with the Boise School District attendance area tool, and ask schools about open enrollment if you want a different one.

  5. 5

    Test daily life

Shop at a grocery store, find the nearest clinic and library, and look at the cost of living guide so your budget uses real prices.

  6. 6

Match the season you will live in

Smoke season usually runs from late July to September and inversions usually start in November, so a visit then shows what you will live with.

  7. 7

    Write down your first deadlines

Before you fly home, read the new-resident deadlines so you know what is due after the move.

Look-see trips: common questions

How long should a look-see trip be?

There is no official rule. Three days lets you drive a weekday rush hour, visit two or three areas and still see a weekend.

When is the best time to visit?

Visit in the season you are least sure about. Smoke season usually runs from late July to September and usually start in November, so those are the months to test.

How do I get around once I land?

See the transit and airport guide for getting from Boise Airport into town and around the valley.

What should I bring home?

A short list: the commute times you measured, the monthly cost of two or three homes, and the questions you still need answered.
