Which district serves your address, and how to enroll

By J&H Digital Services LLCChecked Oct 23, 202625 sources

In short

Your school depends on your exact address, not your city name, so check the district's boundary tool first. Then register online with that district and upload proof of age, proof of residency, a parent ID and immunization records. Most new students can start within 2 to 3 school days of a complete application, and a child must be 5 on or before September 1 to start kindergarten.

Enrollment is the state's 2025-26 midterm count. Boise's fall 2026 count was 21,805. Start dates come from district calendars (Vallivue) and the Boise Mom calendar roundup; 2027-28 dates should also land in mid-August. All districts end the year in late May. What else do parents ask about public schools?

Will my child get a bus?

Usually only if you live 1.5 miles or more from your assigned school, by the walking route, or if the district has marked your route as unsafe. In Boise, bus stops show in the Infinite Campus parent portal. Open-enrolled students do not get busing.

How do school meals work?

Fill out one free and reduced-price meal application per household each school year, online through your district. Some schools with many low-income families serve free breakfast and lunch to every student, with no application.

My child is learning English. What help is there?

At enrollment you fill out a home language survey. If another language is spoken at home, the school may give an English screener and place your child in English language support. You can ask the school office for an interpreter at no cost.

Does my child's IEP transfer?

Yes. If you move from another state during the school year, the new district must provide services comparable to the old IEP until it finishes any evaluation and writes a new IEP. Bring a copy of the IEP and recent evaluations to enrollment.

When can my child start kindergarten, and is it full day?

Your child must be 5 by September 1 (6 by September 1 for first grade). Kindergarten is optional in Idaho. Boise, West Ada and Nampa offer free full-day kindergarten; ask other districts about their schedule.

How do I compare schools?

The Idaho Report Card shows test scores, reading results, demographics and enrollment for every public school. Pair it with a school visit.
