This list is from 55places.com, a real estate site, and is not complete. Some entries are manufactured-home or townhome communities. Ask a local agent or the for the age rules, fees and what the HOA covers. Watch out: hOA dues and club fees in 55+ communities can rise over time, and new phases may change the feel of a neighborhood. Check the age rules (most require at least one resident 55 or older), rental limits, and how far you will be from a hospital and your doctors. Source: 55places.com: Southern Idaho 55+ communities

How do assisted living and care homes work?

What types of care are licensed in Idaho?

Residential assisted living facilities (RALFs), certified family homes, which care for one to four adults in a private home, nursing homes, and home and community based services. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare licenses and inspects them.

How do I find and check a facility?

Use the Health and Welfare 'Find a facility or agency' lists. For assisted living, the RALF page lets you look up complaints and inspection (survey) reports. For nursing homes, Medicare Care Compare shows star ratings and inspection results.

How do I find a certified family home with an opening?

The state's certified family home program posts a vacancy report. You can also email the program at cfhcc@dhw.idaho.gov.

Who can help me compare options?

Area 3 Senior Services Agency gives free information and assistance, and its ombudsman program helps residents of care facilities with problems or complaints. Be careful with free referral websites: many are paid by the facilities they recommend.
