In short

If you don't get insurance through work, buy a plan on Your Health Idaho, the state's marketplace. Moving to Idaho opens a 60-day special enrollment window, and open enrollment for 2027 runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 15, 2026. Before you pick a plan, check whether it covers St. Luke's, Saint Alphonsus or both.

How do I get a marketplace health plan in Idaho?

  1. 1

    Check your timing

Enroll during open enrollment (Oct. 15 to Dec. 15), or within 60 days of moving to Idaho. Idaho's window ends earlier than the federal HealthCare.gov one, so don't wait for January.

Time 60 days after your move
  2. 2

    Gather proof

For a move, you need ID (such as an Idaho driver's license), two papers showing your new address dated within 60 days of the move (a lease, utility bills or a purchase agreement), and proof you had coverage in the 60 days before you moved.

  3. 3

Apply and see if you get a tax credit

Apply on Your Health Idaho. It checks your income for a premium tax credit and sends you to Medicaid if you qualify for that instead.

    Cost Free to apply
  4. 4

    Compare networks, not just prices

Look up your doctors and your nearest hospital in each plan's directory. A cheap plan built around one hospital system may not cover the other.

    Time 30 to 60 min
  5. 5

Get free help if you want it

A certified agent can walk you through plans at no cost to you.

What else do people ask about Medicaid, work plans and costs?

Who qualifies for Idaho Medicaid?

Adults under 65 with low income can qualify. As of January 2026 the monthly limit was $1,836 for one person and $3,795 for a family of 4. Pregnant women and children have their own programs, and CHIP covers children in families that earn more.

How do I apply for Medicaid?

Apply online at idalink.idaho.gov, call (877) 456-1233, or visit a Health and Welfare office. Have ID and proof of household income ready.

Is there a Medicaid work requirement?

Starting Jan. 1, 2027, most adults on Medicaid expansion must report at least 80 hours a month of work, school, job training or volunteering, or earn at least $580 a month. Many people are exempt, including pregnant women, caregivers of young children and people with disabilities.

I'm starting a job here. When can I join the work plan?

Most employers give you a short window after your start date to enroll, often 30 days. Ask HR on your first day, and check whether the plan covers the doctors you want.

Why did my premium go up?

Approved 2027 rates rose about 12% on average, and the extra federal subsidies of 2021 to 2025 ended. Idaho's reinsurance program still lowers individual premiums, by an estimated 16% for 2027.
