How do I register to vote in Idaho?

  1. 1

    Check that you qualify

You must be a U.S. citizen, 18 by Election Day, and an Idaho resident for at least 30 days before the election. People with a felony conviction can register once they finish their sentence.

  2. 2

    Register online (fastest)

Get your Idaho driver's license or ID card first, then register on the state voter tools site. The online deadline is 11 days before an election. Use your primary Idaho home address.

  3. 3

Or register by mail or at the county office

Print the state form and mail or bring it to your county elections office. Canyon County says paper pre-registration closes 25 days before an election.

    Cost Free
  4. 4

    Or register when you vote

Missed the deadline? You can register in person during early voting or at your polling place on Election Day. Bring a current photo ID and a document with your current address.

    Cost Free
  5. 5

    Find your polling place

Look up your registration and precinct on the state voter search. On Election Day you must vote at your assigned polling place. During early voting in Ada County you can use any early voting site in the county.

  6. 6

    Bring ID to vote

Accepted photo IDs include an Idaho driver's license or ID card, a U.S. passport or other federal ID, a tribal ID card, or an Idaho concealed weapons license.

What do I bring to register in person?

  • A current photo ID: Idaho driver's license or ID card, U.S. passport or federal ID, tribal ID, or Idaho concealed weapons license
  • Proof of your current address if your ID does not show it: a utility bill (not a cell phone bill), lease or mortgage, bank or credit card statement, pay stub, insurance proof, property tax bill, or a school enrollment letter
  • Your Idaho ID number or the last four digits of your Social Security number

How do I get a library card?

  1. 1

Go to the library that serves your address

Each city or district has its own library. Boise Public Library cards are free for people who live in or own property in Boise city limits. Other areas are served by Ada Community Library, Meridian Library District, Eagle, Garden City, Nampa, Caldwell and others.

    Cost Free for residents
  2. 2

Bring ID and proof of address

Boise asks for a photo ID. If your ID shows an old address, also bring mail, a lease, a bill or your car registration with your new address. You can also start an application online.

  3. 3

    Use it across the valley

Most valley libraries belong to the LYNX consortium, including Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Garden City, Ada Community, Nampa and Caldwell. Your card lets you borrow across member libraries. Libraries also host free classes, kids' programs, clubs and events.
