Say BOY-see, not BOY-zee. Expect cyclists to roll through stop signs (it is legal here), stay far away from irrigation canals, keep right on the 29-mile Greenbelt, and plan around winter . Locals float the 6-mile Boise River stretch from June 20 to Labor Day in 2026 and cheer on Boise State's blue football field, blue since 1986.

That is the Idaho stop, legal here since 1982. Cyclists may treat a stop sign as a yield sign: slow down, yield to anyone with the right of way, then go. At a red light they must come to a full stop and yield, then may proceed with caution. Drivers should still expect them to stop and yield, but do not be surprised when they do not fully stop.
A pink dip of ketchup and mayonnaise, often with a little seasoning, served with fries at many Idaho and Utah burger spots. Ask for it if it is not on the table.
The raised area south of the Boise River and downtown. It is a series of step-like terraces the river cut over a very long time. Bench neighborhoods grew after canals brought water up the bluff, and many are older, mid-century homes.
Basque immigrants came to southwest Idaho in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many to herd sheep. Their descendants built a strong community. Downtown's Basque Block has the Basque Center, a museum, restaurants and festivals such as San Inazio each summer and Jaialdi every few years.
Keep right, pass on the left and call out "on your left" or ring a bell. Pedestrians have the right of way. Dogs must be on a leash 8 feet or shorter. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed; faster Class 3 e-bikes are not. Unpaved sections such as the Bethine Church Trail are for walkers only.
In summer, people float about 6 miles of the Boise River from Barber Park to Ann Morrison Park, and a shuttle runs between them. The 2026 season ran June 20 to Labor Day. Idaho law requires kids 14 and under to wear a life jacket, and loaner jackets are available at Barber Park. Wear one even if you swim well; the water is cold and fast early in the season.
In winter, a layer of warm air can trap cold air in the valley like a lid. Fog, frost and dirty air can sit for a day to more than a week, while the mountains above are sunny. Check air quality advisories, limit outdoor exercise on bad days, and drive up to Bogus Basin to get above it.
Boise State installed the first non-green artificial turf in the world in 1986. Locals call it the Blue, or the Smurf Turf. Watching a Broncos game there is a local rite of passage.
